Statutes of The National Academy of Psychology (India)

 

1.  Preliminaries

(i)

These statues shall be called the Statutes of the National Academy of Psychology (India).

(ii)

The National Academy of Psychology may also be designated as the NAOP (India). It is called the Academy hereinafter.

(iii) 

The Statutes shall come into effect from the date of the first convention. Psychologists who decided to form the Academy at Bhopal in Feb. 1987 and those invited by the Ad hoc Convening Committee to the first convention shall give the Statues the final shape and adopt them. They will automatically constitute the Council of Members of the Academy.

(iv) 

The Head Office of the Academy shall be located in the City where the convenor of the working Committee resides.

2.  Aims and objectives

(i) 

To arrange for publication of one or more journals, with a view to publishing psychological researches carried out in this country and abroad, of such a standard that is comparable to any prestigious journal of Psychology.

(ii)

To promote quality of teaching and training for research in Psychology and to foster training for growth of Psychology as a science as well as a profession.

(iii)

To encourage holding of regional and national meetings of active committed psychologists with a view to promoting critical discussions on psychological issues of local and/or national relevance.

(iv) 

To establish and maintain liaison with state as well Central Governments, industrial organizations and other institutes and Departments with a view to enhancing employment and other service opportunities for psychologists and to be actively involved in the applied aspects of Psychology.

(v) 

To endeavour for the establishment of a National Council of Psychological Research and Training for accreditation, promoting the growth, and safeguarding the interests of Psychology in India.

(vi) 

To establish and maintain liaison and cooperate with national as well as international Associations in matters of academic as well as professional matters.

(vii)

To identify and honour psychologists for their outstanding contributions to psychological research and/or professional effectiveness and to invite them to serve as fellows of the Academy.

(viii) 

To endeavour for high ethical standards in teaching, research and professional services.

(ix)

To carry out such other functions as may be deemed necessary from time to time by the members of the Academy.

3. Members and Membership

(i)

New membership shall be conferred on a psychologist by invitation/nomination/application. Members of NAOP should have a Master’s degree in Psychology or related disciplines and be involved in one or more aspects related to teaching, research and practice. Students of Psychology or related disciplines can become Associate Members without voting rights. All members have to go through the application process and will become a Member or Associate Member of the Academy with the payment of the prescribed dues. A person shall continue to be a member so long as the annual dues are regularly paid. A person shall cease to be a member either by default or by unanimous decision of the Working Committee.

(ii) 

Subject to other provisions of the statutes, the persons who become Associate Members or Members can keep their membership on payment of the following membership contribution.

Membership:  

    For Members:

Rs. 300 /- (without NAOP’s Journal) Rs. 500 /- (with NAOP’s Journal)  

   

   

    For Associate Members: 

Rs. 100 /- (without NAOP’s Journal) Rs. 300 /- (with NAOP’s Journal)  

The amount to be paid as membership contribution and the additional amount to be paid for NAOP’s Journal (presently Psychological Studies) subscription may be revised from time to time by the Working Committee. 

(iii)

Members who have made distinguished contributions (Teaching/Research/Applications) performed distinguished service to Psychology shall be nominated to be Fellows of the Academy. The guidelines for nomination of a Fellow shall be provided by the Working Committee and approved by the Council of Members.

4. Council of Members

(i) 

The Council of members will consist of members and Fellows of the Academy, and shall ordinarily select a Chairperson (President) by consensus for a year to conduct its meetings. The Convenor of the Working Committee shall convene meetings of the Council of members and record its proceedings and maintain records.

(ii) 

The Council of Members shall finalize academic, research as well as professional policies and programmes of the Academy, and forward the same to the Working Committee for implementation and necessary action.

(iii) 

The Council of Members shall decide the ways and means for financial resources to meet the expenses of the Academy, and shall discuss and pass the budget to be placed before it by the Treasurer after obtaining approval of the Working Committee.

(iv) 

The Council of Members shall meet at least once a year, normally at the time of Annual Convention, and take stock of the affairs of the Academy as well as define future policies and courses of action, provided that extraordinary meetings may be held on requisition by the Working Committee, or by the Board of Advisors for discussing and deciding issues raised by the requisitioning body. The notices for such extraordinary meetings shall be sent to the members at least 10 days before the date of the meeting.

(v) 

The Council of Members shall have the right and duty of taking decisions of inclusion of new members to be suggested by the Working Committee, provided that, notwithstanding anything otherwise stated in these statutes, the Council of Members shall have the right of disapproving the names suggested by Working Committee.

5. Working Committee

(i) 

a.  

Working Committee shall consist of eleven members to be ordinarily nominated by the Council of Members for two years ordinarily by consensus.

b.

Members of the Working Committee, thus nominated shall designate ordinarily by consensus, one member as its Convenor, one member as its Treasurers, and one as the Editor of the Journal.  

c.

The Convenor will convene and conduct meetings of the Working Committee and the Editor will look after Journal work under the superintendence of the Working Committee.  

d.

The Working Committee shall be the executive organ of the Academy, will implement the policies decided by the Council by doing every thing necessary to fulfill the objectives of the Academy.

(ii) 

The Board of Advisors will consist of three members to be unanimously nominated for a period of three years by the Working Committee from amongst the full members of the Academy. The Board of Advisors may co-opt one or more senior members say past chairpersons, if there is a need.

a.

The Board of Advisors hall be the highest advisory body of the Academy and shall have the duty of advising the Working Committee and the Council of Members in all matters pertaining to the objectives of the Academy and its functioning.

b.

The Board of Advisors is empowered to decide issues referred to it by the Council of Members and/or Working Committee and its decision shall be final and binding for all members.

c.

The Board of Advisors may intervene and tender advice on the functioning of the Academy, if, and is only if, such intervention/essential for keeping the Academy on its desired functional course. Such advices issued by the Board of Advisor shall be placed before the next meeting of Council of Members for ratification.

6. The Editor and the Editorial Board

(i) 

The Editor member of the Working Committee shall be the Chief Editor of the Academy Journal and shall form an Editorial Board as well as a Board of Foreign Consultants on advice of the Working Committee.

(ii) 

The Working Committee may have more than one Chief Editors according to the number of Journals or other serial publications as are sponsored by the Council of Members.

(iii) 

The Editorial Board shall formulate editorial policies in detail for publications in accordance with the policies and plans decided by the Council of Members.

(iv) 

The Editorial Board shall be accountable to the Working Committee for regularity and standard of its Journals and other publications.

7. Annual Convention

(i) 

Any academic institution may be accepted as the host by the Convenor of the Working Committee in consultation with its members for holding the Annual Convention of the Academy either by contacting the Institute or by obtaining requests from the same for this purpose.

(ii) 

Registration and other charges to be paid by the participants in the annual conventions shall be decided by the host institution in consultation with the Working Committee.

(iii) 

General meetings of the Academy in annual conventions shall be presided by the Chairperson of the Council of Members and in his absence by the Past Chairperson or Chairperson elect.

8. Financial Matters of the Academy

(i)    

The Treasurer shall be responsible for maintaining accounts and financial records.

(ii) 

The accounts of the Academy shall be maintained in some scheduled Bank in India.

(iii) 

All transactions of the Academy shall be done through cheques and the right of withdrawal shall rest in the treasurer and the Convenor of the Working Committee jointly.

9. Amendments to the Statutes

(i) 

The provisions of statutes may be amended by the Council of Members on Recommendation of the Working Committee provided that the Council of Members shall have no right to introduce modifications in the statutes without prior recommendation of the Working Committee.
